NAVRAATRI is a seasonal festival that is observed twice annually. The first period, which is synonymous with spring and renewal, is called Basant; while the second, which commenced yesterday, is called Sharad Navraat. This period is especially dedicated to the glorification and veneration of the female aspect of God, namely Maha Durga, Maha Saraswattie, and Maha Lakshmie, according to Pandit Ravi Persaud, Priest-in-Charge of the Vishnu Mandir.
He said that Hindus believe that the universe and cosmos are products of the Supreme Creator, and that the creatirix energies of the universe are represented by Prakriti (Mother Nature), whom is responsible for production and productivity. Both periods, he emphasizes, provides the bhakta (devotee or aspirant) the opportunity to reflect on his personal conduct and accomplishments. Pt. Ravi elucidated that, while religion serves as a conduit to bring people of common ideas together to socialize, it also explores the individual capacity to enhance his potential to a state of subliminity. Navraat establishes the bhakta into a state of purity – from a mode of human passion and desires to a mode of goodness, or self-realization.
Pandit Ravi explained that the first three days is devoted to Mother Durga worship for the removal of afflictions, diseases, and physical pain. During this period the aspirant seeks the Goddess’ blessings for physical adequacy while simultaneously rising over tamas, or negative propensities.
The second three days of worship, according to Pandit Ravi, pays homage to Lakshmi Devi for prosperous undertakings and the removal of darkness and ignorance; while the last three days are dedicated to paying obeisance to Saraswattie Mata, the source of all knowledge and creative energies, from whom the aspirant seeks higher intelligence and spiritual growth.
Satsanghs and pujas will be held countrywide to observe this occasion as thousands traverse the roadways of Guyana to gather in their respective places of worship and to be the recipients of the Goddesses’ blessings. Pandit Ravi said that this period is very tranquil and peaceful; and the atmosphere that is created will also remind us of our environmental obligations, i.e., to sanitize ourselves and our surroundings.
Pandit Ravi used this occasion to extend Navraatri greetings to all Guyanese, especially celebrants of Navraatri observances on behalf of the East Coast Pandits and Mandir Leaders.
This nine-day period of fasting and prayer culminates with Vijai Dakshmi, meaning the 10th day when victory is awarded to celebrants who had dedicated their energies in observation of this auspicious occasion of Navraatri.
During this period Pt. Ravi will be conducting satsanghs at various mandirs, beginning this evening at the Vishnu Mandir in Alexander Village, to which he is inviting the general public.
