Fazal Kayum’s XI, Trophy Stall and Success are champions

FAZAL Kayum’s XI, Trophy Stall and Success easily disposed of their opponents in the final of the inaugural Regal Stationery and Computer Centre-organised and part-sponsored three-tier nationwide softball tournaments at the Demerara Cricket Club ground last Sunday.

Faltazil Kayum’s XI met All Star Conquerors from Linden in the Female 10/10 final and after restricting their opponents to 82 for 4 from their 10 overs, replied with 83 for 3 from 8 overs, thanks to Player-of-the-Match Vanessa Choonoo’s unbeaten 24.
Fazil Kayum’s XI walked away with the Mike’s Copy Centre trophy and $50 000 cash prize, while All Star Conquerors took back to Linden, the runner-up prize of $25 000 and the Regal Stationery and Computer Centre trophy.
In the Male Open 10/10 finals, inaugural Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T) nationwide 10/10 champions Trophy Stall humiliated South Stars to take the title and the Regal Stationery and Computer Centre trophy and $100 000 cash prize.
They bowled out South Stars who had to be content with the $40 000 and Star Party Rentals trophy for their runner-up efforts of 48 thanks to Ramnarine Latchman’s 3 for 6, before replying with 50 for 2 from 5.1 overs.
Up next was the battle for the Elegance Jewellery and Pawn Shop Male Over-35 t20 softball finals between Better Hope and Success, in which the former batted first and were restricted to 146 for 8 from their 20 overs, to which Success replied with 147 for 4 from 18.2 overs, thanks to Hakeem Majeed’s 55.alt
The victors took home $100 000 and a trophy, while the losers were left with $40 000 and a trophy for their efforts.
At the brief presentation ceremony which followed, representative of the tournament’s various sponsors, Ian John, thanked the teams who competed on a high level throughout the tournament and heaped praise on the organisers especially Mahendra Hardyal of Regal Stationery, while promising to have a final played in Linden.
“Judging from the performance of Linden’s All Star Conquerors team in this competition and the GT&T 10/10 tournament this year, it is safe to say that the sport is on the move in the mining town and needs development.
To this effect, we all need to get on board and aid in the development of the softball cricket in Linden and a tournament will be hosted in and around Demerara, with the final being played at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground in Linden,” stated John.
Apart from the cash prizes, the players-of-the-match in all three finals were rewarded.  There was musical accompaniment for the hundreds of spectators who thronged the venue to witness the culmination of the tournament, which had taken a back seat due to inclement weather and other competitions that were held earlier this year.
Apart from Regal Stationery and Computer Centre and Star Party Rentals, other sponsors of the tournament which promises to be an annual affair are: Elegance Jewellery and Pawnshop, Mike’s Copy Centre and ‘Click’.
