ALLIANCE for Change (AFC) Councillor on the Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam) Regional Democratic Council (RDC), Mr. Naithram has called for the shutdown and removal of the small factory that is using aluminum to make cooking utensils and long spoons at Taymouth Manor on the Essequibo Coast. He told the RDC meeting, earlier this week, that smoke from the chimney at the place is affecting schoolchildren and other residents.
However, Chairman of the RDC, Mr. Parmanand Persaud said Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) officers, who visited the Region and inspected the manufacturing facility, explained that the owner complied with their every recommendation and constructed the chimney according to the specifications for smoke emission.
Persaud said he also had discussions on the issue with the headteacher and several teachers of the Taymouth Manor Primary School which is located not far away.
It had been suspected that the smoke is the cause of several asthmatic cases in the community.
