GCC win NBS 40-over 2nd Div Competition – as DCC abandons run-chase to protest a decision

THE final of the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) New Building Society (NBS) Ltd., came to a controversial end between the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) and Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) as the latter won because the opposition abandoned their run-chase to protest a decision.

altAs such, when the DCC batsmen refused to take to the middle once again the umpires ruled  victory in favour of GCC at their home ground.
GCC took first strike and made 207 all out in 39.1 overs before DCC’s innings was stopped at 128 – 7 in 27.3 overs when the issue arose.
Chronicle Sport understands DCC’s Dennis Squires played a ball to point and his partner, Linden Lyght, went for a run that was not on which resulted in the striker’s end’s wicket being disturbed with both batsmen out of their crease.

However, the batsmen did not cross and Squires was given out by the umpire but Lyght headed back to the pavilion.
When the umpires tried get Lyght to return he kept heading to the pavilion while Squires kept insisting that he was not out and Lyght was the wicket that fell.

Squires eventually went back to the  pavilion and the DCC team left the venue leaving the title to the home team.
During the presentation, President of the GCA, Roger Harper expressed his dissatisfaction at DCC’s actions and stated that the club will be dealt with in a manner the association sees fit.
Man-of-the-match and Highest Run Scorer in the final Elon Fernandes played well for GCC with a disciplined 85 from 83 balls. He was supported by Winston Forrester (26) and Almando Doman (44).
DCC’s Dexter George was another contender for the Man-of-the-match award with figures of 5 – 40 from eight overs, but unfortunately he left with the  DCC team. DCC was good in the field with four run-outs against the eventual victors.
The home team was defending quite well as DCC was 69 – 4 at the end of the 14th over. By the 28th over Robin Bacchus, Samuel Mackenzie, Devon Lord, Winston Forrester, Doman and Trevon France had each taken a wicket for GCC.
DCC on the other hand struggled with Jamal Hinckson (24), Cowen Ismond (18) and Jahron Byron (15) back in the pavilion.
Meanwhile, in the preliminary round Doman was adjudged as the Best Bowler, PSC’s Ryan Rajmangal was the Best Batsman, Zone A’s MVP was ECC’s Shaeed Mohammed and Zone B’s MVP was UG’s Dennis Heywood.
