ATTORNEY General (AG) and Minister of Legal Affairs, Mr. Anil Nandlall hosted another of his weekly ‘meet the public’ sessions on Wednesday in the Carmichael Street, Georgetown compound of his ministry.

altIt started at 09:30hrs and the minister did not speak to the media until he had dealt with the last person waiting to speak to him.
At 12:30hrs, he informed that, during the weekly occurrence, he sees and average of 25 persons and at least 100 people have personal contact with him per month, since he initiated the exercise upon his assumption to office.
Nandlall said he adopted this practice after the late Dr. Cheddi Jagan, who met members of the public every Saturday at his party’s headquarters until his death.
The AG said it was in keeping with the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) philosophy and ideology, which is staying in constant contact with the masses, interacting with them and hearing and trying to solve their problems.
Nandlall said it helps him to be informed by the people and, in turn, formulate polices to prevent the recurrence of the issues complained about.
He added that, usually, it is the working poor people who are confronted with such problems and may not have the financial ability to retain expensive lawyers or access facilities other than those provided by the government.
The minister also made mention of the recently opened PPP office at Annandale, East Coast Demerara, where he also meets, regularly, with members of the public.
Other ministers, including Ms. Priya Manikchand, Mr. Ganga Persaud and Mr. Irfaan Ali have all utilised that office and had useful interaction with the public.
In Nandlall’s view: “All of this is putting into practice and keeping alive that facet of Cheddi Jagan’s politics which extended to regular and timely interaction with the ordinary working class so that the party and the government remain connected to the pulse of the people and, by extension, the pulse of the nation.”
Other members of the public who may have issues with the legal system can see Nandlall at the AG’s Chambers every Wednesday at 09:00hrs.
