West Coast Invaders take WCDA T20 final

THIS year’s West Demerara Cricket Association (WDCA)-organised T20 tournament culminated last Sunday at the Joe Vieira Park, where West Coast Invaders emphatically proved their supremacy by defeating Vergenoegen Cricket Club in the upper league competition.
Invaders won the toss and elected

altto bat although there was a constant threat of rain and amassed an intimidating score of 186 for 5 in their 20 overs – Khemraj Ramsundar top-scoring with 45 (5×6, 2×4). He received support from Ganesh Narine and Richard Baker who scored 24 and 20 respectively.
Bowling for Vergenoegen, Hamesh Persaud captured 3 for 30 runs in his allotted 4 overs, before watching his team crumble to 57 for 8 in 8.3 overs and before bad light stopped play. The eventual winners were declared via the Duckworth/Lewis method.
Only Dharmendra Singh who made 20 runs provided any significant resistance to the Invaders’ bowlers, as Richard Backer took 5 for 7 runs in his 4 overs to catapult their batting, earning himself the Man-of-the-Match award.
The winning team received $100 000 and a trophy while a quantity of monetary awards were given for performances during the tournament.
In the first match of the day played between the Lower League Clubs, Independence Sports Club and Long Pond Rangers, the Independence boys had the better of Long Pond in a match reduced to 10 overs because of early morning rain.
Batting first, Independence scored 99 for 4 in their 10 overs with David Mohabir contributing 52, before they dismissed Long Pond Rangers for 91, to come away with an 8-run victory.
Meanwhile, the WDCA-organised Pooran Brothers Under-19 and NDS Furniture Store 40 overs-a-side first division competition are set to bowl off tomorrow and Sunday with several matches.
In the Under-19 tournament, McGill will oppose Wales at Wales, Windsor Forest and Cornelia Ida will do battle at the latter’s ground while Canal Number Two Sports Club will travel to Zeeburg to take on the home team.
First division action will see Meten-Meer-Zorg West taking on Independence at the Joe Vieira Park tomorrow. On Sunday at the same venue, Independence will oppose Goed Intent Sawpit and at Zeeburg, the home team will challenge Long Pond Rangers.
