THE Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU) has expressed satisfaction with what it described as “the unexpectedly positive performance” of the Skeldon Sugar Factory over the last four weeks.
The union said this is so, although some crucial remedial work on the factory, and its accessory components have not yet
been undertaken.
A statement from the union said: “Last week, the sugar production realised at this important factory was 2,481 tonnes, the highest since the commissioning of the factory in August 2009.”
It said the General Council committed to the myriad tasks ahead of the Union as it grapples with its day-to-day work and challenges.
GAWU also announced that, following the successful conclusion of its 20th Delegates’ Congress on August 28, the 52-member General Council met for the first time on Saturday, September 29.
That meeting unanimously elected the Central Executive Committee, comprising, among others, Komal Chand (President); Jankie Persaud (Honorary President); Uranie Heeram (Vice-President); Seepaul Narine (General Secretary); Mohamad Ahamad (Assistant General Secretary); Derek Thakur (Organising Secretary): Aslim Singh (International Affairs Secretary) and Rooplall Persaud (Treasurer).
Michael Inderdatt, Walter Raghoo, Bevon Sinclair, Harvey Tambron, Abrahim Nagamootoo, Janice Leander-Fowler and Bickram Singh also secured election as Committee Members.
Second highest
The General Council, which meets once every three months, is the second highest forum of the union after its Congress and manages the affairs between Congresses.
The Central Executive Committee meets once monthly and assists in the managing, a release explained.
GAWU said the General Council wants the Board of Directors of the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) and the management of the industry to address especially those agricultural issues which fetter a quantitative yearly level of sugar production, in keeping with the corporation’s factory capacities and its present human and other resources.
The statement said the September 29 meeting hailed the positive performance of the industry over the past few weeks, adding that, last week, the highest weekly sugar production for months was attained as a production of 9,369 tonnes was declared.
