Fisherman Deodat allegedly threatens to kill son & wife – CJ grants bail after magistrate remanded defendant

WHEN Fisherman, Deodat Persaud appeared recently before Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate Clive Nurse, facing two charges of threatening to kill his son and wife, he was allowed to leave the court on his own recognizance, pending the court’s receipt of a probationary report.

Reports are that Persaud had threatened to kill his son on 11th February, 2012, and his wife, Tulsi, on 12th June 2012.
But on receipt of the Probation Officer’s report, Magistrate Clive Nurse remanded Persaud to prison to await trial of his cases on October 30.
Defence Counsel Mohamed Zafar then moved the matter of bail to the High Court, and Persaud was granted bail in the sum of $15,000 on each charge.
In his petition for bail, Persaud alleged that his son is also facing trial for threatening him – his father.
Persaud said the trouble started one night when his son brought a teenage girl to sleep at his (father’s) home, and he (the father) objected to that, sparking a row between father and son.
Defence Counsel Mohamed Zafar, thankful to the Chief Justice for granting his client bail, said Persaud had been able to acquire bail, and has returned to sea to earn his living.

The lawyer said Persaud will return from sea in time for his October 30 trial.
