Defendant who received sound thrashing reprimanded and discharged

SOOKRAM Ramnarine yesterday appeared before Georgetown Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton to answer to a charge of assault, wherein he is alleged to have assaulted Wilbert Horatio on August 14 at Prashad Nagar, Georgetown. Police Inspector Burgett Grant, prosecuting, said that on the day in question, at around 04:30 hrs, the virtual complainant, a security guard, was on duty at a Prashad Nagar location when he heard a strange noise.
When Horatio turned around, he saw the defendant pushing his hands into his guard hut, and Horatio held on to the defendant’s hands.
The defendant jumped the fence and ran, but the virtual complainant gave chase behind him, and caught up with him, after which a scuffle ensued and the defendant bit Horatio.
Grant said Horatio took Ramnarine to the Prashad Nagar Police Outpost, and when he was arrested, Ramnarine admitted to the charge.
After pleading guilty to the charge, Ramnarine told the court that he would usually seek work around the neighbourhood, and on the day in question, he went to ask the virtual complainant for something to eat. He said the virtual complainant held on to him, gave him a good beating, and told him that only thief men would walk around at that time.
After seeing visible marks of violence on the defendant’s body, the magistrate told the defendant that she would reprimand and discharge him, because he had received a good thrashing so she could not give him a double penalty.
