Confessed burglar sentenced to one year in prison

THIRTY-SIX-YEAR-OLD Gordon Rollins, of Cumberland, East Canje, was sentenced to one year imprisonment, on Monday, after he pleaded guilty to burglary before Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo at the New Amsterdam Court, also in Berbice. Police Corporal Roberto Figueira, prosecuting, said, on July 4 last, Khemraj Chartiary secured his home and retired to bed.
But, on awakening the following day, he observed that his kitchen was broken into and a report was made at Reliance Police Station, from where ranks contacted the prisoner who confessed to committing the offence.
Rollins, subsequently, handed over, to the police, a bag, a hammock and a cap, also worth $14,000.
Pleading for leniency, the burglar told the court he did not know what overcame him to commit the crime.
