ACTING Police Commissioner, Leroy Brumell yesterday called on the Traffic Department to have ranks strategically placed at bars, night spots and other drinking places to apply the breathalyser test to motor vehicle drivers. He made the call because drinking and driving is one of the leading causes of road fatalities.
The Top Cop was, at the time, addressing the gathering at Police Headquarters, Eve Leary, on the occasion of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) awards ceremony.
He urged Traffic Chief, Brian Joseph to use the breath test, especially on weekends, to monitor drinking drivers “because our road fatality figure is nothing to boast about.”
Brumell declared that there is much lawlessness on the roads and some drivers contribute to their own deaths, due to the nonsense they do on the roadways, like speeding, drinking and driving.
He said, for this year, traffic statistics show 41 road accidents with 43 deaths, including two children while, for the corresponding period last year, there were 62 road accidents with 68 deaths, including six children.
