WICB Regional Under-17 Tournament

Guyana destroy Leewards, inch closer to lead
THE Guyana U-17 team put forth a terrific performance to destroy Leeward Islands in the third round of the WICB Regional Under-17, 50-over Tournament and move one step closer to the top of the point standings.
Guyana have 14 points and are in second place behind Jamaica who have just half a point more. A distant third are Windward Islands with 9.5 points ahead of Trinidad and Tobago (9 points), Barbados (5 points) and Leeward Islands (0.5 points).
Yesterday in T&T at Bon Accord, Guyana won the toss and elected to bat first. They posted a more than challenging total of 250-7 in their allotted overs, for a side that don’t seem to get their performances in order.
Shimron Hetmyer and Tajenarine Chanderpaul both top-scored for Guyana with 79 even though Leewards’ Asham Hodge was the pick of the bowlers with 3-15 from six overs.
Guyana battled to a 163-run victory after they restricted the opposition to just 87 runs in the 28th over. Saeed Williams and Marc Gokkaran had futile scores of 19 and 16 as Gudakesh Motie steamrolled the batting lineup to finish with 4-37 from nine overs which included a maiden.
He was supported by Keone George and Bernard Bailey who finished with 1-17 and 3-16 respectively.
In the other two matches yesterday, Jamaica defeated T&T by 18 runs while Windwards trounced Barbados by 58 runs.
The action continues today with T&T meeting Barbados at Bon Accord, Guyana facing Jamaica at Shaw Park and Leeward Islands challenging Windward Islands at Plymouth.
