THREE inmates of New Amsterdam Prison, who were each nabbed with cannabis (marijuana) in the anus, following routine body searches at the penitentiary, had varying sentences imposed on them. They all pleaded guilty before Magistrate Adele Nagamootoo at New Amsterdam Court, in Berbice, last Friday.
Police Sergeant Roberto Figueira, prosecuting, said the trio, Earl Fordyce, Richard Fraser and Tameshwar Persaud had, temporally, left their place of confinement to undertake community tasks on June 4.
But, on their return, as usual, checks were made on their persons at the infirmary and the narcotic was found inserted in them.
Fraser, who was serving a sentence for a similar offence and expected to be released last Saturday, now has to remain in confinement for three more years, that being the penalty for his possession of seven grammes of the narcotic.
Fordyce, who is currently serving one year was fined $6,000 with the alternative of two days imprisonment for having one gramme of the illegal substance.
Persaud, who was jailed for three years on being convicted for burglary, got an additional three years for having seven and a half grammes.
