Driver gets 48 months imprisonment for two deaths

MAGISTRATE Fabayo Azore has imposed a 48-month prison sentence on Ravin Veerapen, who was found guilty on two counts of causing death by dangerous driving.
His lawyer, Mr. Rodwell Jagmohan has since filed an appeal.
Police Corporal Roberto Figueira, prosecuting, had argued, at Albion Court, Corentyne, that the deaths of Ashanie Williams and Salim Mohammed were proven beyond dispute.
The case for the prosecution was that Veerapen drove at such an excessive speed in a residential area, where there was also a mechanical workshop, that he was unable to control his vehicle and it was involved in a collision, fatally injuring the two pedestrians and damaging other vehicles parked at the side of the roadway.
In his defence, the convict said, whilst he was driving, a white car made a ‘U’ turn in front of his.
But the other driver said, in his evidence, that, when he began to turn, Veerapen’s vehicle was not in sight.
The prosecutor said the testimony proved the reckless speed at which Veerapen drove and did not keep a proper lookout.
Another prosecution witness, Faizal Ali stated that he had given Veerapen his vehicle, about 09:00 hrs, to take to Speedy Workshop, at Nigg  Settlement, Corentyne, as well, on that fateful day, to carry out mechanical repairs.

Loud impact
Ali said he was at his Fyrish, Corentyne home, when, at 15:00 hrs, he heard a loud impact and, on rushing to the scene, he saw his vehicle damaged.
A burgundy motor car and a silver grey car nearby were also damaged.
The witness said he observed Williams on the southern side of the road with injuries to her face and other parts of her body. A male East Indian, later identified as Mohamed, was lying on the road some distance away.
Another witness had seen Williams leaving Chan’s shop before she was hit from behind, resulting in her being hurled into the air and falling against a utility post.
Mohammed was talking to a friend when he was struck and both he and Williams were taken to New Amsterdam Hospital, also in Berbice, where they were pronounced dead.
