J&S Electrical book place in quarterfinals
FOLLOWING their 2-1 win over Ministry of Public Works last Saturday at the Banks DIH Thirst Park ground, J&S Electrical have booked a place in the quarterfinals, which start on Saturday in this year’s Kalden Organisation’s Inter-Ministry/Corporation seven-a-side football competition. Deon Alfred and Nigel Denny were the persons responsible for J&S Electrical’s goals, finding the back of the net in the 14th and 27th minutes respectively, after Oneil Duncan had given his team a glimmer of hope, with his 4th minute strike.
In other matches played, John Fernandes Limited defeated Ministry of Education 4-1, with Jamal Joseph scoring a brace in the 9th and 13th minutes, while Alden Lawrence and Delroy Henry added their solitary strikes in the 22nd and 29th minutes respectively.
As was evident in the J&S Electrical/Ministry of Public Works encounter, Sherwin Anderson found the back of the net for the Ministry of Education in the 4th minute, but it was a goal that proved futile as JFL sent his team packing from the tournament.
Guyana Pharmaceutical Corporation (GPC) were also in winners’ row, when they vandalised Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T) 4-0, with their goals coming off the boots of Ken Agard (20th and 22nd), Kelvin McKenzie (14th) and Alpha Sylvester in the 29th minute.
The action continues tonight at the same venue with three more first-round matches from 18:00hrs.
In the matches scheduled for tonight, GT&T and the Ministry of Education will be looking to redeem themselves when they go up against Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) respectively, while Media United will oppose Ministry of Tourism in the final matchup.
According to Mark Younge, one of the organisers of the tournament, the winner of tonight’s third game will book a place in the quarterfinals, where they will join Banks DIH and Republic Bank from Group A and play Bank of Guyana in a Group B fixture.
John Fernandes also await the results between Ministry of Education and GRA. Should GRA come out victorious in this encounter, they will face GPC in a tie-breaker to decide who will join JFL as Group C quarterfinalists. J&S Electrical and Guyana National Shipping Corporation (GNSC) have already qualified from Group D.
The winners of this tournament are guaranteed $250 000, while the second-, third- and fourth-placed finishers will receive $150 000, $75 000 and $25 000 respectively, with trophies accompanying all the cash prizes.
