Guyana, T&T comfortably into semis after second night
AFTER two nights of intriguing football, hosts Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago have cemented their place in the semi-final stage of the inaugural Guinness Street Football Challenge which is being played at the National Park Tarmac. In the opening match last night Antigua fell to the Twin-Island Republic 0-2 then Guyana got past St Vincent and the Grenadines with another 2-0 result and up to press time, the other three matches, namely Antigua/St Lucia, T&T/St Vincent and Guyana versus St Lucia were still to be contested.
After just one night of competition, the teams have tightened up on their game but Guyana and T&T are still way ahead of the others. Last night’s opening match saw T&T’s Kerwin Simon score in the second and third minutes to leave Antigua in disarray as they easily secured three points to move on to six points.
Like the opening night, Guyana contested the second showdown of the evening where they once again put forth an excellent performance.
The captain Andy Duke drew first blood as early as the second minute then was supported by Vincent Thomas who scored in the first minute of the second half (11th) and based on their performances so far, fans who are expected to stage a better turnout for tonight’s action may certainly see Guyana lift the championship trophy when the die is cast.
Tonight the final and third-place showdowns will be contested along with the remainder of preliminary matches and a local exhibition match, with these games being complemented by the presence of Jamaican artiste Bugle, who is scheduled to perform during the intermission period.
The action gets under way at 19:00hrs andan admission fee of $1 000.
