ENMORE MARTYRS

Take my right hand in yours
Symbol of strength and power
And let us walk in silence
As our tender humane hearts hear
The stolid voice of serene history
Relating past lives and past deaths;
And let us in silence think of those
Who died on a dark sunless day
In the embrace of a budding struggle
When sugar sweet sanctioned bloodshed
And teardrops mixed with blood to create
A new answer to the deeds of darkness

Guns triggered, displayed their mindless power
Brutal Bullets pierced vulnerable bodies
Shattering lives
Drawing Blood
Leaving in the memories of time
The deeds of a death filled day

But out of sorrows, songs are born
And out of tears, tenderness gives way
To vows of victories

Today, we hear their voices of protests
Today, we remember the fall of five.

We remember what they wrote in blood
And we are writing the rest
Assured of the stars and the sky
That life is more than a dream in dust
It’s a journey beyond chains and shackles

For those who died did not dream of deaths
They dreamt of life and life is made of dreams.

Editor’s note This poem was recited by the author at the recent Enmore Martyrs observance
