AMERICAN television and research are solely responsible for my wealth of knowledge of many sport disciplines in the international arena and I admit there was a time where my total focus was on the international scene…Some persons felt that I was foreign-minded and to balance my focus, I decided to make a u-turn and went on a quest to understand the sport systems in Guyana as an independent observer and based in the fields. Via the dailies over the years, I have made countless contributions with my data transmission, showering my support to sports and on many occasions, appealing to the business community/private sector for consideration in shelling out financial aid to sports in Guyana…The reason is that it is evident that many sports associations have always been requesting financial assistance whenever there is a need to jet off athletes to overseas meets and as some persons would refer to it, “they always begging” and sports for the most part has been on the decline.
It is my contention that for any athlete to reach the elite level internationally, one needs the private sector/business community in their corner, even if you are based elsewhere…Indeed, I also believe that Guyana possesses the talent, but at the end of the day, without financial resources, it’s just wishful thinking that one could rub shoulders with the global elites.
During my quest, I have had a fair amount of private discussions with some persons from the business community and the following is a brief from a few of those conversations:
A. One person felt that a large part of monetary contributions is not channelled to the rightful persons (athletes), but rather make it to the pockets of associations executive members.
B. One has indicated to me that if anyone is considered and manages to acquire funding, any athlete would have to be accompanied by a sports association executive member, coach and parent at a meeting and they have to be very convincing before a cherub is made out.
C. One made it very clear that “cricket’ is the thing and that it will be.
D. I vividly remember asking someone if consideration would ever be given towards sports, I was on a quest and the individual said to me in a very nice manner to ‘go down brave with my quest” and come back with my quest findings and I will answer your question regarding consideration.
I have now made a personal decision to “indefinitely” cease all future correspondences via the dailies appealing to the private sector/business community for consideration towards financial aid to sports in Guyana. Their continuous and future consideration must be an independent one and must not have anything to do with any data transmission coming from me based in the fields.
I say to the sports athletes of Guyana, I genuinely have made a tremendous effort over the years on your behalf, thankfully to all four dailies and it’s your personal fight now along with whichever sports associations that overlook you to garner financial aid from the private sector/business community. On the other hand, my support remains intact whenever you manage to jet off to overseas meets regionally and if possible, farther afield.
