I refer to a statement in the Stabroek News newspaper of Friday, June 8, 2012,from Crime Chief Mr. Seelall Persaud on “Doctor found teen’s death due to natural cause.” The Crime Chief explained that because the girl was hospitalised and was being treated by a doctor, a post mortem was not performed. According to Iana Ramsaran’s family, she told them what transpired at the ranch before she died. Iana got pregnant at age 15, while she was in Form Three at the Moco Moco Primary School. Her father threatened to summon her boyfriend, one Eon Rodrigues and put him before the court for child support after she had delivered the child. Her boyfriend went into hiding after a series of cattle rustling incidents because he was wanted by the police at Lethem; according to sources, Eon’s family had a terrible reputation for crimes.
Eon never supported her and the child. Iana’s mother told her to get a job in Georgetown so she will be able to maintain herself and the child. Later she got involved with Eon’s brother who took her away to the Point Ranch to work and live with him; there she witnessed the stealing of 50 heads of cattle by her boyfriend.
A report was made to the police about the missing cows; Iana knew where these stolen cows were hidden because the Rodrigues brothers told her about it. Those animals were tied up in the savannah according to Iana; the police had suspected the brothers as the rustlers, went to the ranch where they were living but did not find them.
Iana then left the ranch and went back to her mother’s home at Moco Moco. The police captured Ivor, her boyfriend’s brother and questioned him about the stolen cows; they then started to harass Iana about the cows; she told the police everything and they took her to the savannah where the cows were discovered.
The boys were locked up and the owner of Point Ranch bailed them. It was alleged that the owner bought the stolen cows, her boyfriend hijacked her and took her to the ranch and they injected cocaine into her back bone. She fell ill and was transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where she died.
According to the father and a niece, they witnessed the post mortem examination.
Doubts surrounding Iana Ramsaran’s death still exist
