Man who promised never to repeat narcotics possession obtains magistrate’s mercy

— fined $3,000 & six months’ community service
JERMAINE Johnson appeared yesterday before Georgetown Magistrate Hazel Octive Hamilton charged with possession of narcotics.
Police alleged that on June 1, at Georgetown, the man was discovered in possession of one gramme of cannabis.
Police Corporal Simone Payne, prosecuting, said Johnson was acting in a suspicious manner when he saw a police patrol car approaching him and upon seeing this, the rank stopped Johnson and conducted a search on his person, discovering the narcotic wrapped in a Ziploc-bag in one of his pockets.
Johnson pleaded guilty to the charge. He told Magistrate Hamilton that he was sorry for committing such a horrible crime, and that he did not give the police a hard time when they arrested him. He promised he would never again commit such an offence.
He was fined $3,000 for the offence, and asked to perform six months’ community service, or alternatively serve one year’s imprisonment.
