Culture Ministry, Russian Embassy collaborate on art competition
THE Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, in collaboration with the Russian Embassy, staged an art competition Friday morning in observance of International Child Protection Day, at the Burrowes School of Arts, Carifesta Avenue, Georgetown. Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony, addressing the children gathered, gave the assurance that the Ministry will be looking at ways for the holistic development of young people in Guyana.
He noted the progress they are making academically and attributed their success story to the investment that government is making in the sector.
Anthony mentioned the scholarships that young Guyanese students have received as a result of the partnership that Guyana and Russia share, pointing out that he had also pursued his studies through a Russian Government scholarship.
He observed that Russian scholarships for young people are still on offer, with sponsorship for their entire duration of the designated programme.
With regards to the competition, Anthony said the main objective is to raise awareness on the important role a child plays in society.
“On the creative side of the Ministry, we’re working, not only on art but we have dancing; we have a dancing school. Last year we started a music school and our intention is to roll out music to all communities across Guyana,” he indicated.
During this month, students attending schools at Kwakwani, Hururu and Aroaima took part in the qualifying leg of the art competition and he said a national drama contest will soon be arranged.
Fifty contestants emerged from the qualifiers and took part in Friday’s rivalry. The winning pieces will be sent to Moscow, Russia to be featured in a global art competition.
Russia’s Ambassador to Guyana, Mr. Nickolay Smirnov said the staging, under the theme ‘May there always be sunshine’, will give the students the chance to express their inner emotions.
He highlighted the importance of Child Protection Day, noting that children must be treated as equals as they are the future leaders.
