THE Guyana Chess Federation (GCF)-organised, Topco Juices-sponsored Independence Anniversary one-day Rapid Chess tournament is scheduled for this Sunday at the Kei-shar’s Sports Club on Hadfield Street, Georgetown. Yesterday Sales Manager of Demerara Distillers Limited Alexis Langhorne presented the sponsorship cheque to GCF president Shiv Nandalall at the tournament’s venue.
In her remarks, Langhorne said that her company observed that chess is a small but growing sport and they will continue to play their part in assisting the continued growth of the game, adding that DDL has been working with the GCF since its resuscitation and they are quite pleased with its progress.
This is the second chess tournament for the year that is being sponsored by DDL under its Topco brand and responding to Langhorne, Nandalall thanked her on behalf of the GCF for the continued support given by the company.
He noted that the local chess body is always planning competitions with the objective of allowing players to test their skills regularly.
Meanwhile, the Swiss System tournament consists of seven rounds with a time limit of 40 minutes per game and is open to all male and female chess players in both the senior and junior categories.
Tournament fee for senior non-members is $500 and junior is $300, while members of the GCF will pay a reduced fee to enter, where they will be battling for cash prizes and medals.
Interested players can contact Irshad Mohamed on 664-1650 or Nandalall on 225-8270 during office hours for further details. Registration begins at 09:00hrs while the first pawn in the competition will be moved one hour later.
