Golden Jaguars finish runners-up, as Vitesse  lift Parbo Bier Cup
GUYANA’S representative squad to the 2012 Parbo Bier Football Cup tournament, after being highly criticised by the Dutch media, came out as runners-up as Vitesse of Holland lifted the 2012 championship cup on Sunday evening at the Andre Kamperveen Stadium in Paramaribo, Suriname.
Guyana, who lost the opener to Vitesse of Holland 4-2, came back to demonstrate their dedication and pride for themselves and country as they defeated the SuriPro XI of Suriname 2-1 at the same venue on Friday evening and edged them out again on Sunday in a 2-1 encounter.
Asked about his strategy after losing to Vitesse 4-2, Jaguars coach Joseph Wilson said the game was played in two halves and the first half the score was 3-1 adding that the second-half score of 1-1 showed a major difference against a well-organised and professional team, to which his players are now being exposed.
Wilson said, “With technical and tactical correction to the second half of the first game the similar strategy will be implemented against the SuriPro XI for the second game,” promising the media, the people of Suriname and Guyana, that the team will give good account of themselves.
The Guyana representative side took to the field on Friday holding the SuriPro XI to a goalless first half as they purposefully attacked their opponents and defended their goal effectively.
On resumption of play for the second half, Daniel Wilson created the first goal-scoring opportunity for his side, after he was brought down in the penalty area, following which Jaguars skipper Anthony Benfield converted the spot kick, as he did in the first game.
Eleven minutes later, Kris Camacho took a free ball from his attacker and travelled the flank, sent a perfect pass to the head of Wilson who made no mistake in finding the back of the net in the 67th minute, handing his team a 2-0 lead.
By then SuriPro XI were still in shock and continued their fight for ball possession, since the Jaguars came to them with more confidence and fought to defend the score set earlier on the board.
The Dutch were able to convert from a free kick in the 80th minute, reducing the deficit to one, before the officiating of the game visibly changed as the referee also fought with the SuriPro XI to level the score.
The SuriPro XI got three free kicks during the closing stages of the game which went into 10 minutes of extra time for no apparent reason, but the Golden Jaguars managed to hold onto their lead and eventually came away with the win.
Guyana lifted the runners-up trophy and medals after the SuriPro XI failed to win against Vitesse, who lifted the championship trophy.
