Cultural and religious trends would deter Caribbean Governments from relaxing buggery laws

-won’t happen in our generation, says gender affairs analyst.
While most Caribbean governments would be inclined to simply pass laws aimed at permitting gay unions, cultural crossroads and religious trends would make permitting gay unions in the Caribbean practically impossible.
This is the view of Guyanese-born and UK-based Gender Affairs Analyst, Mrs. Dionne Wilson, in an exclusive interview with the Chronicle.
She said that the Caribbean’s social order and strong religious views do not leave much avenue for homosexuality to be properly understood, much more to be legally accommodated within the pages of our law books.
She is of the view that prematurely enshrining homosexuality within our Constitution would have to await evolution rather than trying to force it into acceptance here and now.
“Our region is not yet mature enough to adapt to that sort of lifestyle. So pro-cross gender supporters like myself must stop being naïve about this, and accept that gay marriage and its related addendums would not find their way into our laws, at least not in this generation”, she stressed.
She added that trying to confront politicians about it in the Caribbean would only create a sore point of irritation, and probably make them more reluctant to engage the subject.
Recently, several small gay and lesbian groupings across the Caribbean have been holding small events in the hope that their respective governments amend laws aimed at allowing same sex unions.
Jamaica, Barbados, Dominica and a host of other Caribbean nations had shut the door on the subject, while making it clear that they have no intention to entertain the legalisation of homosexuality in their respective states.
While SASOD has been pressing the subject with some intensity locally, most of the Guyanese population(if you are to measure from social forums) is totally against government removing Guyana’s buggery laws, or even legalising homosexuality here.
