– at Diamond, EBD
A FIRE which reportedly started through an unattended gas stove destroyed a dwelling house/grocery shop at Lot 683 15th Street, New Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara yesterday morning. Chief Fire Officer, Marlon Gentle said no one was at home when the fire started, shortly after 10:00 hrs, but Shazim Hamid and his wife, Gina Fernandes, have been displaced.
He added that some sort of cooking was involved, and the gas stove was left on while the two occupants went out, but firemen and tenders of the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) responded in good time and were able to contain the blaze to that building.
The couple lived in the upper flat of the building, while the grocery was on the bottom flat of the edifice.
Last Tuesday, fire set by arsonist(s) partly damaged, and left a home water-soaked, at Lamaha Springs in Georgetown, after two men gained entry to the squat, concrete, one-flat house at Lot 62 Rewa Avenue, Lamaha Springs in Georgetown by breaking the back wall with a sledge hammer. They got into a wardrobe and made off with money and jewellery before setting the place on fire.
