Guyana ruggers draw with Barbados

… in must-win situation against T&T
GUYANA senior 15s ruggers are now in a must-win situation coming against Trinidad and Tobago as they seek to qualify for the next round of the North American and Caribbean Rugby Association (NACRA) Regional Qualifiers for the 2015 Rugby World Cup.
The Guyanese will meet Trinidad and Tobago on June 2 at the Guyana National Stadium.
In the press briefing held yesterday at Olympic House, head coach Theodore Henry stated that the Guyana team is expected to be at full strength for the Trinidad and Tobago game, as a number of key players, including Clauduis Butts, Richard Staglon and Ronald Mayers, have indicated their availability for the crucial encounter.
The squad, which took on the team from the Land of the Flying Fish, battled without a number of their key senior players.
This must-win situation came about following the draw against hosts Barbados on Saturday last in a game that ended in a 10-all draw. Both countries failed to capitalise on their conversions after scoring two tries each, and walked away with two points apiece from the match.
Newly elected president of the Guyana Rugby Football Union, Colonel John Lewis, who served as manager of the team, related that the Guyanese made a brave attempt to surge ahead after the scores were level, but their efforts proved futile.
In the showdown, Barbados drew first blood in the 25th minute then Guyana equalised in the 39th minute compliments of Rodwell Hutson.
Neither team converted their try which had the scores deadlocked at 5 at the half. Barbados regained the lead in the 55th minute but did not convert. Guyanese once again drew scores level through a try from Ryan Hinckson in the 70th minute.
