DEXTER Weekes and Joel Hunte (no addresses given) were granted bail on a drug possession charge yesterday, on an application by Defence Counsel Paul Fung-A-Fat. They appeared before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton, charged, jointly, with having on May 12, at 111 Miles, Mahdia, Potaro, three grammes of cannabis (marijuana) and they pleaded guilty.
The magistrate informed the defendants that she cannot impose the penalty of community service because the offence was committed at Mahdia and they would have to be remanded to prison until the next sitting of Mahdia Court, on July 18.
But Fung-A-Fat argued that it is unfair for the defendants to be remanded for so long and he applied for them to be able to change their pleas and allowed pre-trial freedom on reasonable surety.
Weekes and Hunte were then ordered to post $50,000 each until July 18.
However, Leon Roberts, who faced a similar allegation in the same court was refused bail.
He pleaded not guilty to having, on May 12, 30 grammes of marijuana.
The defendant told the magistrate he uses the substance for his asthmatic condition but he will have to remain in prison until his case is called, also at Mahdia Court, to where it has been transferred, on July 18.
