Alleged cell phone thief bonded to keep the peace

— after VC agrees to settle matter
RICHARD Walcott was alleged to have stolen a cellular phone valued $16,000, property of Roslyn Arthur; and when confronted by the virtual complainant, threatened her on May 4 at Sophia.
Appearing before Sparendaam Magistrate, Alex Moore last Friday, charged with simple larceny and threatening language, Walcott pleaded guilty to the threatening language charge, but not guilty to the simple larceny charge.
Sergeant Bernard Browne, prosecuting, told the court that the defendant and virtual complainant had once shared a relationship.
The defendant declared that he did not steal the phone, but simply took what belonged to him. He claimed that he paid for the phone but his ex-girlfriend had used her identification card to make the purchase.
The VC Arthur agreed to settle the matter without a trial.
Magistrate Moore was grateful that the woman had saved the court some time. Nevertheless, he placed Walcott on a bond to keep the peace, failing which he would have to serve a two-week prison sentence.
