Campaign started against food vendors unacceptable practice
VENDORS operating in Georgetown municipal markets are compromising the health of citizens by putting fruits and vegetables for sale on the ground and the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) is concerned about this unhealthy and unacceptable practice. “It compromises the health of our citizens and the well-being of the city,” the municipality said in a release.
The release said, according to market regulations, vendors selling fruits, vegetables, provisions and other foods for human consumption must have them elevated, at least 18 inches above the ground.
The sellers are required to comply with this regulation and assist the M&CC to protect the health of citizens, the release said.
It added that the Public Health and Markets Departments have started a campaign to enforce compliance by vendors.
“In addition, the municipality is calling on those vendors who are offering for sale cheese, eggs and bread to pay attention to their storage facilities and the way they package their foods.
“Cheese should be kept at about four degrees centigrade. Selling that product outdoor is unacceptable as it is a high risk food and could encourage worm growth easily. Also, it is advisable that eggs be kept at about seven degrees centigrade. Open temperature changes the composition of eggs,” the release advised.
