Voir dire proceedings feature in two separate murder trials at Demerara Assizes

JUSTICE Roxanne George, presiding in the Ogle murder trial; and Justice Franklyn Holder, presiding in a murder trial in which the victim is unknown, are both conducting voir dire proceedings to determine the admissibility of alleged caution statements that seek to implicate the accused in the crimes. The accused in the Ogle murder trial are Annandram Dhar Amraj, called Alvin Duck Beak Allan; Naresh Boodhoo, called Allu, Alloo and Taipaul; and Hemraj Boodwah, called Tilly.
These three are indicted with having murdered Seeragie, called Seerajie and Lalita, on February 11, 2006 at Ogle, East Coast Demerara.
A voir dire to determine the admissibility of two oral statements and a written caution statement the number one accused is alleged to have made has already been completed, but the jury have not yet been told of the result.
Yesterday, Justice George commenced another voir dire in relation to a confession statement the number two accused is alleged to have made, which, through his counsel, he has denied.
State prosecutors Miss Renita Singh and Miss Konyo Sandiford have called witnesses to testify, including Assistant Police Supt. Michael Kingston.
Attorneys-at-law Compton Richardson and Peter Hugh are defending the accused.

Justice Holder
Justice Holder yesterday empanelled a jury to try Devon Paul for having allegedly murdered a person whose identity is unknown, in the county of Demerara on October 18, 2005.
As had happened in the Ogle murder trial, the defence and the prosecution agreed that the matter should begin with a voir dire – a trial within a trial.
Senior State Counsel Miss Zamilla Ally, in association with Miss Dianne Kaulesar, is prosecuting.
Attorneys-at-law Debra Backer and Emily Dodson are representing Devon Paul.
Attorney Backer told the court she was objecting to statements allegedly made by the accused on the ground that they were not obtained freely and voluntarily, and in accordance with the Judges’ Rules.
The hearing of that voir dire is continuing in the absence of the jury.
