Guyanese medical student killed in altercation in Cuba

UNOFFICIAL information reaching Guyana is that a final-year male Guyanese medical student pursuing studies in Cuba, through a government scholarship has been killed in an altercation there.
This is according to Public Service Minister, Dr Jenifer Westford, who indicated that her office was trying to ascertain the identity of the suspect, presently in custody of Cuban police.
Contacted by this publication for a comment, Minister Westford said she was still trying to ascertain the identity of the student and the reasons behind the tragic incident. Until then, she would not be able to disclose the name of the deceased. Nevertheless, she did disclose that another student pursuing studies in Cuba has a name similar to that of the deceased.
“We have a name, (but we) are trying to get more information before we break it to the media, and before we contact the parents,” Minister Westford explained. According to Dr. Westford, Guyana is also awaiting a detailed report of the incident from Cuban authorities.
Police have commenced investigating the incident, and have given assurance that every effort would be made to unearth the truth behind this whole matter.
