Over the weekend, residents of the East La Penitence area, through their newly organised community development group, commenced a clean-up campaign around the community, clearing clogged drains and removing garbage which had become an eye sore. The Georgetown Mayor & City Council assisted with a truck and backhoe.
Chairman of the group, Delroy Carrington, said it was formed after members of the community insisted that the area be cleaned up. And so the exercise began, with the help of religious organisations from the community, mainly with members from the Ebenezer Seventh Day Adventist Church and the Salvation Army with community members.
This event started at 06:00hrs on Saturday and concluded at about 14:00hrs on Sunday, by which time an estimated 60% of the community targeted was cleaned. He highlighted that the ready intervention of the M&CC and other residents of the community saw a growing number of persons joining in the activity to make it a success.
Informing the media that there will be continuous activity to keep the environment as clean as those of Prashad Nagar and Lamaha Gardens, Carrington stated that East La Penitence will become a community to be proud of.
