Coomacka’s fairy tale run comes to an end
FOLLOWING their emphatic and entertaining display in this year’s Banks DIH sponsored Linden Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ futsal football competition, Coomacka’s fairy tale run has come to an end, following their 2-0 loss to Rough and Rugged last Saturday night at the Wismar/Amelia’s Ward bus park. Competing in the round of 16 phase of the competition which require teams to win or go home, Coomacka, failed to find the net as they allowed Jamie Wilson to do so twice for their opponents in the 2nd and 16th minute of the match.
Like Wilson, Terrence Aaron, Oswald Benjamin, Leon Gishard and Seon Brewley also had double strikes for Amelia’s Ward Russians Hard Knocks, Porkerburg and Half Mile/One Mile respectively, who defeated Amazing, Star Boyz, Goal Getters and Classic Six to book their place in the quarterfinals which kicks off tomorrow night at the same venue.
Also in winner’s row were Sheriff Squad who defeated El Dorado in regulation time, while Pepper Skull and last year’s runners up Retrieve Unknowns used the penalty kicks method to defeat Trainline Warriors and Top Class to book their place in the final eight.
Benjamin found the back of the net in the 6th and 12th minutes of play and along with Randy Small’s 20th minute strike, guided Hard Knocks to a comfortable 3-1 over Star Boyz, for whom Jermaine Mc Bean found the back of the net shortly before Small’s strike.
Aaron was on strike in the 2nd and 11th minute for Amelia’s Ward Russians, after Shawn Daniels sent them ahead with his goal that was scored in the first minute of the contest, enabling them to defeat the Amazing 3-1, with Errol Davis pulling one back for the losers in the 8th minute of play.
Thanks to Gishard’s brace in the 10th and 12th minute, Porkerburg were able to defeat Goal Getters 2-0 which was the same scoreline at the end of the 20 minutes contest between Half Mile/One Mile, with Brewley scoring his double in the 12th and 16th minutes respectively.
Former national striker Collie Hercules opened the scoring for Sheriff Squad in the 14th minute and when Colwin Davis found the back of the mini goal in the 20th minute, it meant Sheriff Squad had chalked up a 2-0 win over El Dorado.
Having played to a nil all stalemate, Pepper Skull defeated Trainline Warriors 3-2 on penalty kicks, before Retrieve Unknowns who lost to Eagles in the finals of last year’s tournament, defeated Top Class 2-1 on penalty kicks, following a 1-1 scoreline at the end of regulation time.
Marvin Hartman scored the first goal of that contest for Top Class, doing so in the 7th minute, as they took a 1-0 lead at the half which was nullified by Marcello Jansen’s strike one minute after play resumed.
In tomorrow’s quarterfinal action, Half Mile/One Mile will take on Hard Knocks, Pepper Skull and Porkerburg will test each other’s strength, Sheriff Squad will be looking to lock down Retrieve Unknowns, while Rough and Rugged will seek to stop Amelia’s Ward Russians.
There will be two exhibition matches in the night’s action which kicks off at 1830hrs (630pm), featuring BOSAI who goes up against Linden Educational Institute (LEI) and Team Greatness who faces LUSCL.
At stake in this year’s tournament is a trophy and $500,000 for the winner while the second, third and fourth placed teams will receive $250,000, $150,000 and $100,000 respectively with a special prize being presented to the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.
As was evident in last year’s tournament, all 32 teams who entered this year’s competition will receive a hamper compliments of Banks DIH, while the winner can expect a place in the upcoming Regional Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ competition to be held here sometime soon.
