Overseas-based Guyanese fined for cursing magistrate

AN OVERSEAS-BASED Guyanese was fined $25,000 with the alternative of two weeks imprisonment yesterday, for using indecent language to Magistrate Leslie Sobers. Glen Thomas (no address given) appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry and pleaded guilty to the offence, which he committed on April 19.
Thomas also faced another charge of failing to comply with the lawful direction of a policeman but it was withdrawn because the officer’s name was not mentioned in the particulars.
Police Sergeant Denise Booker, prosecuting, said she was not in possession of the file so the details could not have been amended.
Thomas had almost caused an accident when he used the indecent language to Sobers.
The defendant said he does not live in Guyana and was not aware that Sobers is a magistrate.
But he said, when the policeman instructed him to go to the station, he followed the instruction.
