THE second division hockey team of the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) continued their impressive showing in the John Fernandes Insurance-sponsored Guyana Hockey Board second division competition when they defeated Airbenders six-nil at home last Monday. In registering the largest margin of defeat so far in the tournament, the Bourda boys took only four minutes to get on the score sheet, when young Mark Sargeant completed a fine penetrating run to slap his shot past the left leg of Alysa Xavier to give his side the lead.
Patrick Edghill then took the score to 2-0 when he latched onto a poorly defended scoop to flick in the rebound.
Despite the valiant defending by the Airbenders, GCC blasted home two more goals before the half-time whistle sounded, through newcomer Michael Craig and Stuart Gonsalves.
After a slight drizzle, the second half got under way and saw a slower pace as the players struggled at times to find their footing on the surface, which favoured Airbenders who managed to secure a few penalty corners but squandered the chances.
However, an unrelenting GCC were the ones to strike twice, thanks to powerful shots from Trevon Smith and Steven Xavier to complete the victory which pushed them into second position on the points table.
The Hikers remain in top position with nine points while GCC join the All Greys with six points each, Old Fort has three points while Saints and Airbenders round out the pool on zero.
Matches are scheduled to continue tomorrow at the St Stanislaus ground on Carifesta Avenue with Old Fort taking on the All Greys at 14:30hrs, followed by the Hikers versus St Stanislaus clash which bullies off at 16:00hrs.
