. . . to present credentials to President Boutsere today
FORMER Director of Frontiers Department in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Keith George, has taken up his appointment as Guyana’s new Ambassador to Suriname.
The Guyana Chronicle understands that he initially presented his working papers to officials of the Suriname Foreign Ministry and is scheduled to present his credentials to that country’s President Desi Boutsere, today.
Guyana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mrs. Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, when announcing his and other appointments at a news conference earlier this year, had said Ambassador George, while heading the Frontiers Division of her ministry, was instrumental in efforts aimed at protecting the territorial integrity of this country.
She also said he had ensured that Guyana enjoyed its rights and meets its obligations, with respect to the maritime spaces over which it exercises jurisdiction under international law.
He was credited, too, with having played a vanguard role in drafting and finalising the Maritime Zones Act of 2010.
Meanwhile, Guyana is expected to receive agreement from Barbados, soon, for Mr. Michael Brotherson, to accede to the post of Consul General on that island.
The naming of Brotherson as Consul General is an upgrade from the previous position of Honorary Consul, last held by now deceased Mr. Norman Faria.
As Consul General, Brotherson will be addressing all consular and trade matters for Guyana in Barbados, which has a large Guyanese population, as well as oversee the work of the Honorary Consuls in other Caribbean countries.
Following Faria’s demise and prior to Brotherson being appointed, Guyana has been sending immigration officers to the island, periodically, to address matters relating to the renewal of passports and other issues.
Asked for an update on the appointing of some 30 Honorary Consuls and accrediting of representatives in Asia, Europe and the Middle East as was earlier announced, Minister Rodrigues-Birkett said work is continuing to find suitable nominees for the various countries.
