Thieves target revellers at Berbice Mash celebrations

BERBICE police are investigating several reports of robberies of cellular phones during the Mashramani celebrations held in New Amsterdam on Sunday last.
Shortly before midnight, Laver Hutson 25, a car driver of New Street, was replying to a text message on his Blackberry Curve cellular phone as he walked on Main Street to meet his girlfriend, who was approaching from the opposite direction, when a male with a cap drawn into his face snatched the mobile phone and ran away.
Malika Barron of Number 53 Village, Corentyne was in the vicinity of Pitt Street, the main commercial area of New Amsterdam, when an identifiable male dressed in jeans and white T-shirt snatched her Blackberry Curve, valued at $45,000, and disappeared into the crowd.
Former Court Marshall Mahaeshwar Geelall of Lot 50 Stanleytown, New Amsterdam was walking in the vicinity of Alexander Street when he was robbed of his Motorola cellular phone and $15,000 by a known male of Princes Street, Charlestown, Georgetown. The victim and the alleged robber reportedly shared a relationship, which was soured over a year ago. On the night of the incident, Geelall was with his daughter when the robber approached, demanding money, but Geelall continued on his way, irritating the thief, who dealt him a cuff to his left eye, relieved him of his money, and escaped. Geelall has had to undergo treatment for the injured eye.
GuySuCo field Foreman Chetram Ramsaragh, known as “Randy”, of Ankerville, Port Mourant, Corentyne was confronted by an identifiable male in the vicinity of Evil Eyes General Store on Main Street, New Amsterdam, and had his Samsung Star cellular phone, valued at $45,000, snatched away before the snatcher made good his escape. Ramsaragh pursued the thief, but in so doing sustained a lash to his head by an unknown person. He consequently had to be taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital for treatment.
