A COSMETOLOGIST has been charged with drug trafficking following an alleged attempt to export cocaine. Debbie Barker, 49, of 2655 South Ruimveldt Park, Georgetown, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday and was remanded to prison, overnight, after she pleaded not guilty to attempting the exportation at the General Post Office (GPO).
Particulars of the offence said it was committed on January 23, when the defendant trafficked 510 grammes of the narcotic.
Attorney-at-law Mr. Paul Fung-a-Fat, for the defence, told the court that Barker is cooperating with Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) officers and it is likely that her case will be dropped, because she would be giving evidence against another defendant.
CANU Special Prosecutor Oswald Massiah said Barker went to GPO with a box containing false nails to export and was in possession of an identification card bearing her picture with the name Dawn Alicia Jordan.
Massiah said, as is the CANU custom, the box was opened and searched and the nails were found wrapped in cardboard and plastic with a powdery substance between.
The Prosecutor disclosed that another person will face charges today in connection with the same matter and it was based on information received from Barker that the other individual was arrested.
Barker returns to court today.
