Three charged in $145M Demerara River drug bust

THREE men charged in connection with the cocaine and cannabis (marijuana) bust, aboard a Trinidad-bound fishing vessel earlier this week, appeared in court yesterday.
Facing separate charges of trafficking in narcotics, before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, they all pleaded not guilty.
The charge against the boat captain Billy Glasgow said, on January 18, on the m.v. Bismarck 2, he had 103.94 kilogrammes of marijuana and 27.203 kilogrammes of cocaine for trafficking.

It is alleged that, on the same day, Steve Reddy had similar amounts of both narcotics on the very boat and the allegation against the third defendant, Mark Singh (no address given either) is that he trafficked 27.203 kilogrammes of cocaine, on January 18, too, at Houston, East Bank Demerara.
Attorney-at-law, Mr. Vic Puran, the appointed special prosecutor in the case, said the Bismark 2 was intercepted by Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) agents with cocaine and compressed marijuana worth $145M.
He said the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Coast Guard assisted CANU in the operation on the Demerara River, after Reddy made arrangements to put the cocaine on board and Singh aided and abetted him to collect and place it on the vessel.
Attorney-at-law Mr. Glen Hanoman represented Glasgow while Mr. Peter Hugh entered appearance for Reddy and Singh.
Hugh asked the court to note that Reddy was severely beaten and the magistrate advised that, before the remanded prisoners are taken to the Camp Street Jail, efforts be made to have Reddy medically examined by a doctor.
The cases will be called, again, on February 7.
