Granger is new Opposition Leader

BRIGADIER Ret’d David Arthur Granger, M.S.S.; M.P was yesterday unanimously elected Leader of the Opposition at a sitting of the National Assembly, summoned by Speaker Raphael Trotman. Granger was nominated by Dr. Rupert Roopnarine of A Party for National Unity (APNU), and this was seconded by Dr. George Norton, also of APNU. There were no other nominations, but Speaker Trotman called for a show of hands, and all 31 members present voted in Granger’s favour.
After declaring him duly elected Leader of the Opposition, Speaker Trotman took the opportunity of being the first to extend congratulations to him.
“I have no doubt that you will discharge this office to the best of your known ability. It is a proud moment for Guyana, because in my view the office has now taken on a different context, and I see you as the ‘Majority Leader’, Trotman said.
Khemraj Ramjattan of the Alliance for Change, and Basil Williams M.P for Region 4, Demerara/Mahaica – a member of APNU, also congratulated Granger.
Basil Williams, who extended congratulations on behalf of the Leader of the PNC-R, Mr. Robert Corbin; the Central Executive of the PNC-R; and indeed the entire membership of the PNC-R in Guyana, added:  “We are confident that, with Cde. Granger at the helm as the Majority Leader, our aspirations should be realized”. Meanwhile, Granger first thanked the Speaker for his kind remarks; then Dr. Roopnarine and Dr. Norton for nominating him to the position of Leader of the Opposition.
Mr. Granger also thanked his colleagues of A Party for National Unity for voting for him. Said Mr. Granger, “I would like to take this opportunity to renew my resolve and the resolve of A Party for National Unity to bring about real change in this country – not superficial change, but real change in the lives of the ordinary people in this country.”
To the Speaker, Granger declared, “You have a tremendous responsibility; I have a tremendous responsibility, and this House has a tremendous responsibility – not only to the people of Guyana now living, but to all posterity.”
On this note, he announced that the constitutional office of Leader of the Opposition, will be located, not in a political headquarters, but in a public place, so that people from all regions, and all parties will have access to the Leader of the Opposition.
And Speaker Trotman said he looks forward to sharing such responsibility with the Leader of the Majority Opposition.
