Police charge Jamaican with overstaying, cocaine trafficking

A JAMAICAN national was, on Thursday, remanded to prison on charges of cocaine trafficking and overstaying his time in Guyana. Lloyd Fairweather appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry and pleaded not guilty to the offences, one of which said, on January 9, at Fedex Office, in Kingston, Georgetown, he had two grammes of the narcotic for the purpose.
The other allegation is that, between October 20, 2011 and January 9, 2012, he failed to comply with the permit granted to him to work in this country.
Police Sergeant Lionel Harvey, prosecuting, said, on receiving certain information, ranks went to the Fedex Office and arrested the defendant, who was in possession of two postcards that contained the illegal substance.
The prosecutor said, upon his arrest, it was also revealed that he had overstayed his time here.
Attorney-at-law Mr. Adrian Thompson, appearing for Fairweather, told the Court that the defendant was of the view that he could stay as he was in the process of renewing his extension.
But no cocaine was recovered in his possession, the lawyer claimed.
The cases will be called, again, on January 26.
