-customers with illegal connections to pay $25,000
THE Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) the has embarked on a countrywide disconnection campaign for outstanding water charges which commenced December 2011 to date where approximately 15,000 customers were disconnected.
A release said that GWI has discovered that customers are reconnecting their services illegally. GWI has a zero tolerance policy for persons who refuse to pay for water charges and will prosecute any customer who reconnects themselves in accordance with the provisions of the Water and Sewage Act 2002.
According to GWI’s Chief Executive (acting) Nigel Niles, “all customers who are illegally connecting their services will face legal action and fines, disconnected customers are urged to visit the nearest GWI office to make payment or enter into a payment plan and not tamper with their services”.
“It is imperative that these customers contact us regarding their arrears,” warned Niles, “failure to do this may prove even more costly should the matter be brought before a Court of Law”. Customer’s found illegally reconnected may be made to pay a tamper fee of $25,000.00 and a reconnection fee of $6000.00 in order to have their service restored.
To apply for a GWI payment plan customers can visit the nearest GWI location or contact the company via the Customer Services Call Centre on 227-8701 or via the e-mail address customercallcentre@gwi.gy
