Gov’t will not act contrary to court ruling on GCB matter – Teixeira

ATTORNEY-General and Minister of Legal Affairs Anil Nandlall, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr Frank Anthony and Director General in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Elisabeth Harper have been in continuous discussions with CARICOM, the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) and the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) in order to find a solution in the interest of cricket in Guyana. Speaking at a post-Cabinet press briefing at the Office of the President, Presidential Adviser on Governance, Gail Teixeira, who filled in for Cabinet Secretary Dr Roger Luncheon said that Government cannot ignore the ruling of Acting Chief Justice Ian Chang which renders the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) as an entity, one that is not legal.
“We have made it clear publicly and otherwise that we are constrained by the ruling of the court and therefore we do not want to find ourselves in an adversarial or contradictory role on what the courts have ruled in relation to this matter,” Teixeira said.
On January 6, President Donald Ramotar had requested a meeting with CARICOM and other officials to address the issue of Guyanese players not being allowed to play in the regional T/20 tournament set for Antigua on January 9.
Following a teleconference at the Guyana International Conference Centre, the WICB decided to allow the Guyanese team to play.
Dr Hunte indicated his willingness to bring an agreeable closure to the local cricket situation and agreed to visit Guyana for a meeting with Guyanese officials to iron out some of the discrepancies that emanated since the establishment of the IMC.
Subsequently, he and WICB Chief Executive Officer, Dr Ernest Hilaire arrived in Guyana and have since held engagements with the Guyanese Head of State.
Moreover, the four-day regional tournament as well as the Australia and New Zealand tours to Guyana have been confirmed.
