I BELIEVE that the time has come more than ever for the government or some regulatory body to clamp down on media excesses. Chief among the culprits is the Kaieteur News which seems to have a vendetta against ministers of the government. They stop at nothing in their attempts to malign government ministers and other officials. They even manufacture lies and indulge in sensationalism, misinformation and distortions in their sordid bid to throw dirt on characters who are perceived to be supportive of the government.
The recent casualty in their shameless scheme is the Honourable Minister of Housing and Water, Irfaan Ali, for the renovation of a house he bought from the Guyana Sugar Corporation about two years prior to his becoming a minister of the government.
Minister Ali has since sued the Kaieteur News for publishing the story which is riddled with inaccuracies and innuendoes. According to him, the story has put the security of his family at risk. This is indeed a serious matter which has been met with the correct reply. The only thing I am sorry about is that the minister did not sue for more and bring the owner of that newspaper to his knees.
