Piracy being addressed at highest level
MINISTER within the Ministry of Agriculture, Mr. Alli Baksh has disclosed that during ongoing investigations into piracy attacks on the high seas, discussions are in progress with the police and coastguard on how to protect fishermen. He told Essequibo fishermen, during a recent visit there, that, while he cannot reveal some of the measures being put in place, the issue is being addressed at the highest level.
Minister Baksh, however, explained that some of the piracy issues can be traced to fighting for fishing grounds.
Over the past months, several Essequibo fishermen were terrorised and robbed of outboard engines, fuel tanks and gasolene while fishing in the Shell Beach, Waini areas of North West District, in Region One (Barima/Waini).
