Alfro Alphonso employee remanded on $39.7M larceny charge

A FORMER clerk of Alfro Alphonso and Sons Enterprise was remanded to prison yesterday, on a $39.7M larceny charge. Natasha Persaud, 22, is charged, indictably, with having, between April 20 and July 30, 2011, being a clerk or servant of the company, stolen 13 Demerara Bank cheques for the sum.
Police Inspector Stephen Telford, prosecuting, successfully objected to bail for the woman, on the ground, that if granted, the accused is likely to flee the jurisdiction, as she has previously travelled backtrack to Suriname.
The prosecutor explained that Persaud, who was responsible for writing cheques for her employers, stole the money by writing cheques in different names and had persons cashing them.
Telford said her employers discovered that 13 cheques were missing and the accused suddenly tendered her resignation, then investigations revealed that she bought a motor car.
But defence counsel, Melvin Duke argued that the accused cannot steal the amount of money as she is only 22 years old.
The lawyer claimed she was a junior clerk and had no access to cheques and went to the police station voluntarily after being threatened.
The prisoner is to make another court appearance on January 17.
