Mobile pump installed to drain excess rainfall water
THE Drainage and Irrigation (D&I) Department of the Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam) Administration has installed a mobile pump next to the Devonshire Castle sluice on Essequibo Coast to drain excess rainfall water from canals. Minister within the Ministry of Agriculture, Mr. Alli Baksh, while on a visit to the region yesterday, inspected the blocked sluice channel and the mobile pump.
He was told by the attendant that the sluice channel became silted up with ‘sling mud’ washed in from the Atlantic Ocean.
Regional Vice-Chairman, Mr. Vishnu Samaroo also told the minister that the excess rainfall water in drainage canals will be drained off quickly by the mobile pump and some 4,000 acres, with young rice plants, would not be in danger of flooding.
Minister Baksh said the region is in need of a pontoon with excavator machines to clear sluice channels quickly whenever they are silted up.
