AN Assize jury at the Demerara Assizes last night, by a majority verdict of 10 to 2, found Mohamed Usuf, called ‘Mark”, guilty of attempted murder, committed on his estranged wife Sharon Ganesh in April, 2005. He was jailed for 12 years by Justice Dawn Gregory.
The accused, had attempted suicide after believing that his act of strangulation had been achieved after his wife had fallen unconscious.
His son had turned up in time to cut a cement sling from a rafter from which his father was hanging. In an unconscious state he was rushed to the Georgetown hospital, along with his wife who also was in an unconscious condition, with wire marks around her neck. A wire was used by the accused in the strangulation attempt.
Yesterday afternoon, Justice Dawn Gregory who is presiding at the Demerara Assizes, where the accused was facing a two-count indictment of attempted murder and unlawful wounding , began summing up the evidence to the jury. After addressing them for about three hours, she handed over the case to them for their consideration and verdict.
At his trial, the accused had pleaded not guilty and was represented by Lawyers Nigel Anthony and Lance Perreira.
The lead prosecutor was Miss Retina Singh.
