Attempted murder accused Usuf jailed for 12 years

AN Assize jury at the Demerara Assizes last night,  by a majority verdict of 10 to 2,  found Mohamed Usuf, called ‘Mark”, guilty of attempted  murder,  committed on his  estranged wife Sharon Ganesh in April, 2005. He was jailed  for 12 years by Justice Dawn Gregory.
The accused,  had attempted suicide after believing  that his act of strangulation had been achieved after his wife had fallen unconscious.
His son had turned up in time to cut a cement sling from a rafter from which his father was hanging. In an unconscious state he was rushed  to the Georgetown  hospital, along with his wife who also was in an unconscious condition, with  wire marks around her  neck.    A wire was used  by the accused in the strangulation attempt.
Yesterday afternoon, Justice Dawn Gregory who is presiding at the Demerara Assizes, where  the accused  was facing a two-count indictment of attempted murder and unlawful wounding , began summing up the evidence to the  jury.  After addressing them for about three hours, she  handed over the case to them for their consideration and verdict.
At his trial, the accused had pleaded not guilty and was represented by Lawyers Nigel Anthony and Lance Perreira.
The lead prosecutor was Miss Retina Singh.
