– M&CC seeking understanding with PM Hinds
THE Mayor and City Council (M&CC) of Georgetown currently owes Guyana Power & Light (GPL) a shocking $795M and Municipal Treasurer Andrew Meredith contends that there is no way of dealing with the outstanding bill unless Prime Minister Samuel Hinds intervenes. The debt was revealed by Meredith at the Council’s last statutory meeting for the year on Wednesday.
Contacted yesterday, Chief Executive Officer of GPL, Mr. Bharrat Dindyal said this indebtedness is something that has been happening for years and, on the last occasion when a similar problem arose, the municipality had filed an injunction against the utility, preventing it from disconnecting electricity supplied to the council.
However, Dindyal said the litigation was thrown out last October and it is now up to GPL to decide on the measures it will put in place, decisions that would be made in the coming year.
Meanwhile, Meredith told the Guyana Chronicle, by telephone yesterday, that street lighting mostly accounts for the amount owing to GPL.
He said the council is trying to arrive at an understanding with Prime Minister Hinds, who has portfolio responsibility, as the matter with which they are dealing is very huge.
Meredith said, as of now, monies being paid to the council are being used to address garbage issues, which are priority.
In the past, GPL has had reason to disconnect City Hall because of its outstanding debt.
