THE police are investigating an armed robbery that occurred at about 12:00hrs on Saturday off the coast of No. 43 Village, Corentyne, during which fisherman Leslie Veerasammy, 46, of Mon Repos Housing Scheme, East Coast Demerara and his three crew members were attacked and robbed by five men armed with firearms and cutlasses. Investigations revealed that the victims were fishing when the armed men came up alongside in another boat and held them up. The pirates took away a quantity of fish, fish glue, groceries, a 48 HP outboard engine, a 12 volt battery, and a compass, and escaped, leaving the victims adrift.
Leslie Verasammy and the others managed to reach ashore Monday and reported the matter to the police who, acting on information received, arrested four men.
Subsequent investigations led to the location of the boat suspected to have been used in the robbery and the recovery of two unlicensed 12 gauge shotguns and eight cartridges.
The four men are in police custody assisting with investigations.
